Everything that could go wrong did go wrong for Juventus in their Champions League final defeat by AC Milan, coach Marcello Lippi complained on Wednesday. Juventus were hit before the match by the suspension of Pavel Nedved and matters went from bad to worse as defender Igor Tudor was forced off in the first half because of injury.

Juve managed to hold their Italian rivals to a goalless draw over the 120 minutes but lost 3-2 on penalties as they ran out of gas and several players opted out of taking the spot kicks.

"It's not that they refused, more that they didn't feel like it," Lippi told reporters with a shrug. "Players have their feelings. You can't push them if they just don't feel like it."

It was a third defeat in four finals with Juventus for Lippi and it left the level-headed coach blaming this latest disappointment on fate.

"What can I say? It went terribly badly," said Lippi. "Everything went wrong for us, from the injuries and suspension onwards.

"I'm just so disappointed," he continued. "Everyone was so tired and we didn't have the fuel in the tank to take the opportunities that presented themselves.

The absence of Nedved was always going to be difficult to overcome after the Czech contributed so much to the side's run to the final. "We didn't have him to provide the sort of quality you need," Lippi said. "In this sort of match you need players of the highest quality but the top quality players weren't there for us."

Lippi's third successive defeat in a Champions League final - they won in 1996 and lost in the next two years before this latest disappointment - clearly hurt but he defended his own and his team's record in the strongest terms.

"You can't call us losers," he said. "We've won the Italian title in the last two years. Milan are a marvellous team but you can't say they're better than us."

When ancient Rome was near defeat,
the invincible Tenth Legion was raised:
they beat the barbarians on the battlefield
and Rome gained peace with honour again.
When the traitor, on September the eighth,
left the fatherland in infamy,
the Tenth Flotilla was raised from the sea
and it brought weapons at the cry for honour!

Oh our Tenth Flotilla,
you that mocked England,
you victorious on Alexandria,
Malta, Souda and Gibraltar,
you already victorious upon the sea,
now even on the dry land
you will win!

To you Italian ships, stolen from us
not in battle but by treason,
and to you, our prisoners and dead brothers,
we swear:
we swear that we'll came back,
let this be God's and the Flag's will.
We swear that we'll fight
until we obtain an honourable peace!

it was an amazing game upto around 75mins- then both teams defended heavily- too cautious not to make mistakes that let the other team win.
trezegate was terrible the whole game (even missed a pen!). del piero was carrying the team. buffon was awesome. i think if nedved was playing juve would have won (he was inspirational in the semi's).
schevchenko and rui costa were always creating chances. how many times was inzhagi offside!!
i think the pens could have gone both ways, juventus are a better team on paper.

leeds utd are a joke, it still puzzles me how they can grab failure from the jaws of success (in terms of this season)
